Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 11,   Pages 1365-1377 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0882-5

Abstract: Finite-element analysis (FEA) for structures has been broadly used to conduct stress analysis of variouswas designed and trained to use the geometry, boundary conditions, and load as input to predict the stressThe trained DL model can predict the stress distributions with a mean absolute error of 0.9% and an absolutepeak error of 0.46% for the von Mises stress distribution. This study shows the feasibility and potential of using DL techniques to bypass FEA for stress analysis

Review of self-referenced measurement algorithms: Bridging lateral shearing interferometry and multi-probe

Dede ZHAI, Shanyong CHEN, Ziqiang YIN, Shengyi LI

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2017, Volume 12, Issue 2,   Pages 143-157 doi: 10.1007/s11465-017-0432-3

Abstract:

With the development of new materials and ultra-precision processing technology, the sizes of measured objects increase, and the requirements for machining accuracy and surface quality become more exacting. The traditional measurement method based on reference datum is inadequate for measuring a high-precision object when the quality of the reference datum is approximately within the same order as that of the object. Self-referenced measurement techniques provide an effective means when the direct reference-based method cannot satisfy the required measurement or calibration accuracy. This paper discusses the reconstruction algorithms for self-referenced measurement and connects lateral shearing interferometry and multi-probe error separation. In lateral shearing interferometry, the reconstruction algorithms are generally categorized into modal or zonal methods. The multi-probe error separation techniques for straightness measurement are broadly divided into two-point and three-point methods. The common features of the lateral shearing interferometry method and the multi-probe error separation method are identified. We conclude that the reconstruction principle in lateral shearing interferometry is similar to the two-point method in error separation on the condition that no yaw error exists. This similarity may provide a basis or inspiration for the development of both classes of methods.

Bridging the gap: Neuro-Symbolic Computing for advanced AI applications in construction

Frontiers of Engineering Management   Pages 727-735 doi: 10.1007/s42524-023-0266-0

Abstract: Deep Learning (DL) has revolutionized the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various domains such as computer vision (CV) and natural language processing. However, DL models have limitations including the need for large labeled datasets, lack of interpretability and explainability, potential bias and fairness issues, and limitations in common sense reasoning and contextual understanding. On the other side, DL has shown significant potential in construction for safety and quality inspection tasks using CV models. However, current CV approaches may lack spatial context and measurement capabilities, and struggle with complex safety and quality requirements. The integration of Neuro-Symbolic Computing (NSC), an emerging field that combines DL and symbolic reasoning, has been proposed as a potential solution to address these limitations. NSC has the potential to enable more robust, interpretable, and accurate AI systems in construction by harnessing the strengths of DL and symbolic reasoning. The combination of symbolism and connectionism in NSC can lead to more efficient data usage, improved generalization ability, and enhanced interpretability. Further research and experimentation are needed to effectively integrate NSC with large models and advance CV technologies for precise reporting of safety and quality inspection results in construction.

Bridging reliability and operations management for superior system availability: Challenges and opportunities

Frontiers of Engineering Management   Pages 391-405 doi: 10.1007/s42524-022-0206-4

Abstract: Recently, firms have begun to handle the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of capital goods through a consolidated mechanism called the integrated product-service system. This new paradigm enables firms to deliver high-reliability products while lowering the ownership cost. Hence, holistic optimization models must be proposed for jointly allocating reliability, maintenance, and spare parts inventory across the entire value chain. In the existing literature, these decisions are often made fragmentally, thus resulting in local optimality. This study reviews the extant works pertaining to reliability-redundancy allocation, preventative maintenance, and spare parts logistics models. We discuss the challenges and opportunities of consolidating these decisions under an integrated reliability-maintenance-inventory framework for attaining superior system availability. Specific interest is focused on the new product introduction phase in which firms face a variety of uncertainties, including installed base, usage, reliability, and trade policy. The goal is to call for tackling the integrated reliability-maintenance-inventory allocation model under a nonstationary operating condition. Finally, we place the integrated allocation model in the semiconductor equipment industry and show how the firm deploys reliability initiatives and after-sale support logistics to ensure the fleet uptime for its global customers.

Deep Catalytic Cracking Technology Bridging Petroleum Processing with Chemical Industry

Li Zaiting

Strategic Study of CAE 1999, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 67-71

Abstract:

Deep catalytic cracking (DCC) is a novel technology for producing basic organic raw material, especially propylene, from heavy oil. Research Institute of Petroleum Processing, SINOPEC developed the process and catalyst, and a commercial demonstration was successfully completed in 1990 at Jinan Refinery, China. Up to now, 7 units have been constructed and put into production worldwide. The low carbon olefins produced have been further synthesized to high quality polypropylene, polyethylene, acrylonitrile and other chemicals. Currently, the feedstock has been extended to atmospheric residue and tailor-made catalysts are available. The commercial experience of the first DCC plant outside China, TPI DCC in Thailand, is presented.
